You’re thumbing through your favorite magazine, cup of coffee in hand. The glossy pages sticking to your finger, you’re enthralled by the colorful, bright images of beautiful people. Every article tells you a story of how to become more like them. One catches your eye. It promises you weight loss of a pound a week if you follow their meal plan, laid out simply in black & white. YOU could look like the beautiful people on the surrounding pages. You’re hooked. Who wouldn’t be?
I think we’ve all been there, falling prey to coveting someone else’s body. It definitely has happened to me. This exact situation is what started me in a downward spiral of hating my body, extreme restriction, and over-exercise about ten years ago. It’s been a loooong eleven years (and I’m telling more of my story & sharing two exclusive tips that changed how I think about my body with my email buddies. Be sure you’re in!), but I’ve figured out a frightening, but important truth.
You will not love your body any more 10lbs from now.
If you don’t love yourself before embarking on a journey to change your body composition, it ain’t gonna happen once you’re reached your “after.” For a time, even when I was at my lowest weight, I looked in the mirror and hated what I saw, number on the scale didn’t matter.
So how do you love your body now? I got you. Three steps to loving your body.
Move in a way that makes you happy
When you’re exercising in a way that brings you joy, you begin to appreciate your body in what it can do. I know my momma loves her body a little more when she’s grooving in zumba class. I never felt as proud of my body as I did when I placed in my recent 10k or when I first pulled myself up over the bar. Which leads me into the next step…
Set an action/behavior based goal
Find something you want to achieve with your body and pursue it with persistence and dedication, it changes how you think about it. It helps you realize your body is more than what it looks like, it’s also about what it can do.
I ALWAYS have strength based goals I am working towards. Right now?
10 chin ups in a row (at 4)
2 pistol squats per leg
Pike pull ups (holy hell…..)
These help me channel my energy to “be better” into something more achievable than “looking better.”
Find women who think the same
Finding your tribe is key. You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with, so choose wisely. If you’re surrounded by women who are constantly critiquing their appearance and the appearance of others, you’re going to be plagued by self-doubt. We don’t want that. Find some women who love and appreciate their bodies, and it’ll make all the difference. I promise you. Body image and self esteem are learned!
