Lessons Learned from a Pull-Up Bar

Truth bomb coming your way. A couple things I’ve learned from my favorite piece of workout equipment. 

When I started lifting weights more seriously in January 2015, I set three strength goals.

  1. Complete one, unassisted, full range of motion chin up
  2. Learn pistol squats on both my left and right leg
  3. Perform a turkish get up with a 35lb kettlebell 

My goals are focused on functional fitness and relative strength. I want to be able to move my body around with ease! Even though I made some progress, lost body fat, and gained strength, December 31, 2015 came around and I unfortunately wasn’t able to check off any of my goals.

When I started setting my 2016 goals, I kept walking by the pull-up bar chilling in my living room,and it hit me.IMG_3169.jpg

All last year, I was half-assing my goals.

I would do these moves during my workouts but not outside of them.

I eventually eliminated moves like chin ups, admitting I wasn’t going to progress past my current point of strength.

I modified the exercises so I would be successful (adding a heavy resistance band to assist chin ups or using a TRX for pistol squats), not pushing myself to the limit.

Although these were steps towards my goals, I wasn’t fully committed. I left the pull up bar in my workout room, pulling it out only when I needed it. This was the lesson brought to me by a piece of exercise equipment: I am not going to reach my goals putting in partial effort.

Nothing works unless you do.

Every time I walk pass my doorway, I miss an opportunity to progress towards my goals. To achieve what you want in life, you need to be all in, taking every opportunity to bring yourself a little closer. So what’s that look like?

I hired a trainer to help

I started performing a jumping chin up every time I passed my bar.

TGUs became a staple in my workout program.

Whenever I am standing outside waiting for Juno to go potty, I do two pistol squats, holding onto the fence when needed.

Now, don’t get me wrong. You don’t need to set strength goals to improve or become fit. BUT your goals should be in line with the work you put into them, not walking by opportunities to progress. Since I realized I was skipping these chances, everything’s changed.

In three months, I have made more progress than in all of last year! This is all because I’ve actively chosen, committed, to achieving my goals.
