Tuesday ‘Should’ Invasion

Good morning friends! Happy Tuesday! I’m especially happy because it’s ‘basically’ Wednesday for me. Taking my first day off this Friday since October 2015! WOAH! Juno’s so excited she can’t even take it.

Before heading into my day job (gotta pay them bills), I wanted to speak a little bit to being enough. If you’re like me, you know how hard it can be to not compare yourself to others–or worse, to what you “should” be.

A few times a week, I attend Orangetheory workout classes at 5am. This class has fantastic energy and is a great start to my day. These workouts are pretty intense, designed to kick your butt.

During the 60-minute workout, you will perform multiple intervals designed to produce 12 to 20 minutes of training at 84% or higher of your maximum heart rate, which translates to Zones 4/5. This program design produces workout “afterburn” effect, which is an increased metabolic rate for 24 to 36 hours after the workout. Source

When I woke up this morning, I was dragging. I didn’t sleep super well but decided to go to class anyway. So glad I did. It was a great set, lots of transitions between equipment, and I was able to do the diagonal push ups perfectly. Cue the post workout high.

That high lasted until I got to my car and took a look at my FitBit read out (custom zone is equivalent to the illusive orange zone).

Enter the ‘shoulds.’ I ‘should’ have easily gotten 12 minutes. I ‘should’ have pushed harder. I ‘should’ have gone to bed earlier. On and on.

It took me a little while to change my thoughts and approach it from another angle: listening to my body. Not every workout needs to leave you feeling wasted, and this one didn’t. It felt good, and hard, and varied. I pushed just enough for me today, and I showed up. That’s enough for me.

Tell me, what’s your workout today? 🙂
